I love worship here at First Christian Church. Each of our services is unique and spiritually nourishing in its own way. But today I want to highlight our Saturday night worship that meets in the sanctuary at 5:35pm, because I think it is, in many ways, a hidden treasure. So often I hear people say, “Saturday night is my favorite service!” It surprised me at first, how many people love it so. But, less so anymore. For a few reasons, that I too, have come to love it. I don’t wanna reveal all of its wonder in one paragraph, nor can I. But, a few special things are readily apparent upon entering the room Saturday night for worship… Primarily, the people, warm, welcoming, and caring as they are. The worship, where we each can be led into a spirit-filled God-centered space, and lift up our hearts in devotion to God. Lastly, common to every service of ours, though not to be neglected, is the welcome each is given at the Table. Where each and everyone is invited to come as they are to the table of our Lord, and receive God’s love for them.
In the gospel of John, Jesus had been doing some great things, sharing the good news, spreading the kingdom of God. And before long, people start to wonder about this kingdom, and this man who was from Nazareth. Nazareth!? “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” they ask. And the disciples respond, they say simply, “Come and see.” Just come and see. I offer this same invitation to you. If you’ve wondered about it, if it’s your favorite, but you haven’t been in a while, if you’d like to take a look at the kingdom of God up close, drawn in through a Spirit-filled God-centered worship, come and see.
