As some great philosopher once said, “You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose – but you can’t pick your friend’s nose.” I suppose that depends on the friend… But the truth remains, we do get to choose our companions in life.
Something I often find myself saying to folks who are struggling is this: “Surround yourself with helpful and supportive people that will inspire you to be the person God created you to be. Choose your travelling companions carefully!”
In something called “System Theory,” the idea is that when an individual in a system (whether it’s a family, circle of friends, or even a business) begins to get better, the whole system can benefit. Unfortunately, there’s often a lot of pressure from the system to keep everything the same – even when that’s not good for the individual members.
In order to get stronger and healthier, sometimes we have to reach outside our everyday network of relationships. The Good News is that there are amazing and gifted people at First Christian who can provide that healthy and supportive environment you need. In fact, small groups will be starting again soon. Come to our Ice Cream Social on September 6th to learn more!
