The Last Word

For the past year or so, I’ve been following a new show called “Turn: Washington’s Spies.”  It tells the story of the Revolutionary War from the perspective of ordinary people (many of them civilians) who helped win America’s freedom.  The show is based on actual historical figures.

As I’ve watched the dramatic inner workings of America’s Revolution, I get the same feeling of amazement I got years ago when I watched a detailed history of World

War 2.  In both wars, victory was never a certain thing.  In fact, early on the odds were decidedly against us by a wide margin.

The more I learn about our history, the more I am amazed at the people of vision and faith who were central to leading us.  Even when the whole enterprise seemed doomed to failure, they never lost their hope or flagged in their commitment.

As we approach the 4th of July holiday, let us remember that the real strength of our country has always been in its vision, hope and faith.  George Washington once said, “Make sure you are doing what God wants you to do – then do it with all your strength.”  That was good advice in 1776 and it remains good advice today.
